Panel set up to probe Tung Shin incident

Eyewitnesses are also urged to step forward and provide information.

PETALING JAYA: A committee has been set up to investigate the controversial incident on July 9 when police reportedly fired tear gas and sprayed water-laced chemical directly into the compound of the Tung Shin Hospital during a Bersih 2.0 rally.

Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai said tonight that the committee was formed to clear contradictory statements by various parties about the events leading to the incident.

The ministry secretary-general Kamarul Zaman Md Isa will head the panel.

Liow drew flak from many quarters for denying that the “attack” took place despite images shown on video sites over the Internet on the police action.

He said in a statement that eye-witnesses could come forward to assist in the investigation, adding that they can remain anonymous when giving testimony.

Liow said that “he has faith that the committee will conduct a thorough and transparent investigation which is vital and necessary as patient security and hospital safety is paramount”.

However, no other details – such as the commencement date of the probe and the composition of the panel – were provided. It is learnt that more information will be revealed later.

Tung Shin Hospital on Jalan Pudu is one of the hot spots of the mammoth rally. Police have denied firing tear gas and using water cannons to spray protesters in the hospital compound.

On Monday, Liow met with the hospital board members and defended the police. He also blamed the protesters for “ambushing” the hospital during the rally.

At the same press conference, Tung Shin board chairman Ng Beh Tong was adamant that no tear gas canisters reached the hospital area.

But yesterday a group of doctors rejected Liow’s statement. Some of these doctors were reported to have been working or visiting the hospital when the incident occurred.
