PKR says police fired tear gas ‘dangerously’

July 09, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — PKR will lodge a report against the police for allegedly firing a tear gas canister at Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at close range at the Bersih 2.0 rally today in what the party says was an attempt to injure its leader.

The canister instead hit one of Anwar’s bodyguards, Fayed Al-Fikh Al-Bakri, who is said to have sustained serious injuries on his face and is now being treated at Pantai Hospital.

Anwar, who fell during the police action at KL Sentral, sustained head and knee injuries and is still under observation at the same hospital. Doctors have advised him to wear a neck brace as a precaution against spinal injury.

Selangor executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar, who was marching with Anwar, accused the police of “taking revenge” on protesters rather than safeguarding public safety for firing canisters at eye level.

“I think there are some regulations in how you fire tear gas, at what angle, what degree you fire tear gas. You don’t fire tear gas at the height of the person’s face directly, perpendicular to the road.” he told reporters at the hospital.

“That was what happened because I was right in front of them and the canister missed me, but one of our boys was hit.”

He added the police “never took into heart what the King said” and that changes were needed in Malaysia.

PKR operations director Sharifah Shahidah Kamaruzaman sustained light injuries during the rally but has since been discharged along with PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.
