Seek reform through parliament, not revolution, says Rais

July 13, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should seek reform through Parliament rather than instigate a revolution as such a move would tarnish his political aspirations and goals, Datuk Seri Rais Yatim said today.

The information, communication and culture minister (picture)was quoted by national news agency Bernama as saying Parliament was the proper channel to seek reform as it is the highest institution for Malaysians to raise any issue with.

His comments come in response to Anwar’s assertions yesterday during a youth dialogue that Malaysians should continue to pressure the government over the issue of democratic reform, whether from within Parliament or without as the country was nearing revolution.

Rais warned Malaysians to be wary of the opposition leader’s comments, urging them not to be taken in by his latest political manoeuvrings as the country’s peace and prosperity would be jeopardised.

He added the Malay rulers institution, rights and customs, and religion as well as Parliament would also be at risk.
