Even before the dust can settle and Prime Minister Najib Razak has yet to utter a word, Umno Youth has outright rejected Bersih's request for Stadium Merdeka for the July 9 free-and-fair elections rally.
“We reject Stadium Merdeka. It is not a place for a political gathering. Do in Pakatan Rakyat (administered) state. Furthermore, Stadium Shah Alam was already offered,” Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Umno Youth information chief, said.
His 'rationale' was that the stadium had historical significance and therefore should be denied to Bersih.
Stadium Merdeka, which has a capacity of only 50,000 seats was where the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman declared the country independent from British rule.
Reezal's comment was immediately slammed by Pakatan Rakyat leaders.
"Bersih peope and Pakatan people are also Malaysian people. Who is Reezal to talk? We would put the question to his boss Khairy Jamaluddin and it would be nice to hear the views of MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong and Gerakan's Koh Tsu Koon, not to mention MIC's Palanivel," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
