Daily gets Perkasa’s memo over ‘Ramadan delights’

Even though The Star had apologised , Perkasa says its protest note is a reminder to the paper not to offend Muslims.

PETALING JAYA: Malay rightwing group Perkasa today sent a protest note to The Star as a reminder not to offend the sensitivities of the Muslims.

“We sent the memorandum as a reminder so that they do not offend the Muslims,” said Perkasa’s youth wing chief, Irwan Fahmi Ideris who led a delegation of eight people to hand over the memorandum.

“They should not have published recipes for pork dishes in their ‘Ramadan delights’ pullout,” added Irwan who acknowledged that the daily has issued an apology.

On Wednesday the English daily had published articles of non-halal food items in its pullout entitled ‘Ramadan delights’ which was in the daily’s supplement page entitled Dining Out.

The Star issued an apology today over this issue. It apologised for including non-halal restaurants in its publication for breaking fast delights.

The newspaper’s group chief editor Wong Chun Wai was called up by the Home Ministry yesterday.

Commenting on this matter, the ministry’s deputy secretary general (security) Abdul Rahim Mohd Radzi said: “The ministry views this very seriously, more so as it is a supplement that was aimed at helping Muslims choose food outlets for breaking of fast.”

The Perkasa memorandum was received by The Star’s human resources department chief Henry Asogan
