DAP to screen out potential frogs

Party chairman Karpal Singh is also confident of retaining Penang and to return Lim Guan Eng as the chief minister.

GEORGE TOWN: The bitter experience from the defections of Jelapang state representative Hee Yit Foong and Malim Nawar assemblyman Keshvinder Singh in Perak has taught DAP an invaluable lesson.

For the next general election, the DAP national chairman Karpal Singh assured that the party would screen out all potential ‘political frogs’ from its camp of candidates.

He stressed that party loyalty, capabilities and performance were main features of a vetting system to choose future candidates.

“Only candidates with these attributes and other qualities would be picked.

“We will reject frogs.

“We don’t want any Ibrahim Alis,” emphasised Karpal, clearly chiding the Malay supremacist organisation Perkasa supremo Ibrahim.

Ibrahim won the Pasir Mas parliamentary seat in 2008 general election under the PAS ticket, but soon defected to be rival Umno friendly-independent MP.

Karpal warned the party’s elected incumbents not to be lulled by complacency that they were automatic choice for next election candidacy.

He said non-performing current representatives would be axed and replaced with fresh capable talents.

He indicated that the party already identified fresh faces to replace several non-performing incumbents.

No problems in retaining Penang

Karpal said DAP was confident of maintaining its last 100 per cent electoral success in Penang.

Due to strong public support, he expressed confidence that DAP was poised to retain all 19 state and seven parliamentary seats won in 2008.

“Given to impressive performance of the state government, we should able to secure another clean sweep,” he told newsmen after visiting his Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency here today.

He believes that Penangites would overwhelmingly give their mandate to return Pakatan Rakyat as the state government for next term.

He also believes that Pakatan partners PKR and PAS would fare better in the next election.

PKR won four federal and nine state seats, while PAS won only Permatang Pasir state seat in 2008.

Karpal dismissed state Barisan Nasional prediction, based on intelligence reports, to win 25 state seats to regain the state government.

“I differ with the intelligence findings.

“The undercurrent sentiments are very much favouring Pakatan and the Chief Minister,” said Karpal.

He also said DAP would retain Lim Guan Eng as the Chief Minister for another term given to his impressive performance, adding that Pakatan leadership would support this.

He said Lim was chosen as Chief Minister after the 2008 election because “he was the most qualified person for the job.”

“I don’t see anyone competent within DAP yet to rival him for the post,” Karpal noted.
