Ibrahim laughs off claim he'll lose Pasir Mas

Independent MP Ibrahim Ali remains unfazed by a research finding that indicates he is likely to lose his long-held seat of Pasir Mas in Kelantan following the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally.

NONETrue to character, Ibrahim, who as Malay rights NGO Perkasa president had at the last minute called off the NGO's planned counter-rally against Bersih 2.0, told the researcher to “go take a hike”.

“Who is he? How does he know that I will lose… he can go take a hike,” he said in a one-line text message toMalaysiakini yesterday.

Ibrahim (left) was responding to political scientist Wong Chin Huat's claim that “Ibrahim is unlikely to secure a fourth victory in Pasir Mas” following the Bersih 2.0 rally, which Wong argued had swayed middle-ground voters towards Pakatan.

Looking at demographic and electoral data, Wong argued that Pakatan could stand to win 100 federal seats in the next general election, with BN losing 20 out of 30 of its seats won marginally in 2008.

Also likely to be wiped out in the same wave, said Wong, are pro-BN Independent MPs such as Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong, Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim and Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng, who has since joined Kita.

Rough patch for MCA

The Monash University lecturer, who is also a Bersih 2.0 steering committee member, added that MCA was likely to lose six out of seven of its marginally won seats.

azlanCommenting on this, MCA vice-president Donald Lim said while it was undeniable that MCA was going through a “bad patch”, the party would not suffer such a huge setback in the next general election.

“We have to admit that we have gone through a bad patch since 2008, followed with internal problems that have put us in a bad position,” Lim said.

However, he added, MCA has put extra focus on these marginal seats and was confident it could win over support, but only if the right candidates were fielded.

Asked if this meant the party would not retain incumbents in these dangerous seats, such as Raub that is held by vice-president Dr Ng Yen Yen and Lumut, won with a razor-thin majority of 50.4 percent by MCA secretary-general Kong Cho Ha, Lim was evasive.

“This is up to the party leadership and the BN leadership,” he said. - Malaysiakini
