In the end the liar was MCA: Firm got the job, not 19-year-old

GEORGE TOWN - Part-time college student Mohamad Nursufi Abdul Wahab, 19, who was allegedly awarded a RM1mil project by the Penang government has explained that he was only the project manager of the company.

He said the project to build a double-storey religious school in Batu Maung was awarded to Syarikat Syamir, a Class D contractor managed by his mother Rozidah Omar.

“I attended a contractor's meeting called by the Public Works Department (JKR) on Friday on behalf of the company and the next day, it was reported that the state had awarded a RM1mil contract to a 19-year-old contractor.

“This is not true at all,” he said.

Mohamad Nursufi said he has been following his father around to learn the ropes of the business after completing secondary school.

“I will be graduating with a diploma in business this year and have managed at least three construction projects to date,” he said.

Mohamad Nursufi became the talk of the town after it was reported in several Chinese dailies that he had been awarded the RM1mil construction contract.

His father and Class A contractor, Syamir@Abdul Wahab Abdullah, said the project was awarded to Syarikat Syamir last year.

“We handed over the completed project to JKR in May.

“The project is only worth about RM600,000 and not RM1mil as alleged,” he said.

He said Syarikat Syamir was set up in 1989 and has handled many government projects including the Esplanade field fencing.

He said the religious school project was awarded on merit.

“Syarikat Syamir is not a fly-by-night outfit and we have no connection to any Pakatan Rakyat parties.

“We won the contract because we were the most competitive.

“We were up against some 50 other bidders,” he said.
