Khairy sets criteria for GE candidates

On the Parliament Select Committee for electoral reform, Khairy says it proves that BN is a responsive party that has nothing to hide.

LUMUT: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said only qualified and winnable candidates will be fielded in the coming general election.

He said selection of candidates will be different as only the names of those qualified will be submitted and that it will not be based on quota system.

“Previously we asked for more young candidates to fill our quota believing that it will strengthen the party.

“But we are no longer chasing the quota…if chances of winning is only 20 percent, then we will ask that much from the Prime Minister (Najib Tun Razak),” he told reporters at ‘Jelajah One Malaysia Ramadan at Surau Nurul Iman in Pasir Panjang last night.

Umno Youth is evaluating candidates at all levels to choose those that meet the criteria to become election candidates.

Opposition playing politics

On another note, Khairy who is also Barisan Nasional Youth chairman, urged the Selangor government to quickly issue a complete report on apostasy in the state.

He said action on such a sensitive issue should not be delayed because it involves religion and caused anger among Muslims and Christians in the country.

“Nothing has been confirmed, only talks of attempts to convert Muslims at a Damansara Utama church.”

He said if there were attempts to convert Muslims, then appropriate action should be taken against those responsible.

On the proposed Parliament Select Committee for electoral reform, Khairy said it should not raise suspicion as it will improve the election system.

He said this proves that BN is a responsive party that has nothing to hide and hopes opposition will not take advantage by imposing various conditions.

“Suspicion and prejudice by the opposition proves that they just love to play politics.

The people can evaluate their sincerity to cooperate with BN on electoral reform,” he added.
