Landslide: Pahang may relocate orang asli village

CAMERON HIGHLANDS - The Pahang state government is looking at the possibility of relocating the orang asli at landslide-hit Kampung Sungai Ruil to ensure the safety of the community in the future.

The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shahsaid that six new houses would also be built to replace the ones destroyed by the landslide that claimed seven lives.

“The village has a rich history but it has been in the same condition for a long time,” he said.

He also expressed sadness and conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of victims in the landslide tragedy.

Asked about the cause of the landslide, the crown prince said he was told that the village was too close to a water catchment area near the village.

“We should not have houses next to hills and rivers,” Tengku Abdullah told reporters when visiting the evacuation centre at Brinchang on Monday.

He also announced that the state government would offer RM5,000 in aid to the families of each victim killed in the landslide, while those injured would be given RM1,000 each.

“The Federal Government, through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, will also give RM2,000 each to the families of the deceased and RM1,000 each to those being treated in the hospital,” Tengku Abdullah said.
