Mohamad Hasan lays to rest rumours he had lobbied Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to site the country’s first plant in the state
SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan said that the state government has not received any application to build a nuclear plant in Negeri Sembilan from anyone.
“There are no plans to build a nuclear plant in Port Dickson as alleged by certain quarters,” he told reporters at an event here.
“We will not simply allow the construction of the nuclear plant if the safety and environmental aspects are not taken into consideration,” he added.
Rumours surfaced in August last year that Hasan was lobbying Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to site the country’s first nuclear power plant in the state.
Online portals and pro opposition’s blogs alleged that there was plan by the state government to build a nuclear plant in Telok Kemang near Port Dickson.
Hasan said that land approval to build a nuclear plant was subject to certain terms and conditions set by the state government which took into consideration the wishes of the people.
“The radioactive leakage from the nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan, after the tsunami should serve as a lesson to all,” said Hasan.
On another note, the menteri besar gave an assurance that an enviromental impact assessment report (EIA) will be done before the new Air Force Base project takes off in Sendayan.
“Any project involving more than 40.47 hectares of land needs an EIA report which has to be studied before work can be start.
“The people don’t have to worry as fighter jets and air force planes won’t be landing in Sendayan but at Subang Air Force Base,” said Hasan.
He added that the Sendayan Air Force project will be carried out by the Defence Ministry while the state government’s is only providing the land.
