Police seize Malaysiakini journalist's notepad

Police have seized a Malaysiakini journalist's notepad based on a story published by the online portal on PAS deputy president Mohammad Sabu's claim that he was rammed by a police vehicle during the July 9 rally.

The notepad was handed over to a plainclothes police officer from Brickfields district police headquarters outside Malaysiakini's office in Bangsar yesterday.

The police had invoked Section 51(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code that allows for any court or police officer to obtain documents that are considered necessary for the purpose of its investigation.

On Aug 2, the news portal's journalist was also summoned to Petaling police station to give a statement on the matter.

Among the questions asked was if the journalist knew of any other colleagues who had produced similar stories whom the police could question.

NONEThe move comes two weeks after Federal Public Order and Internal Security Department director Salleh Rashid said that police may take action against 'false claims' made by the PAS deputy president, who is popularly referred to as Mat Sabu.

Mat Sabu had claimed that police rammed him while he was on his motorcycle en route to the Bersih 2.0 rally last month, causing him to sustain a knee injury.

The temporarily wheelchair-bound Mat Sabu had said that a 2.5-inch-long screw was put into the back of his knee to keep it in place following the incident. - Malaysiakini
