Report on Jais 'church ops' finds its way online

A report purportedly written by a senior official at the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has found its way online, with several bloggers already demanding to know why the state's Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has yet to make his stand known on the controversy.

NONEAvailable on several blogs, and picked up today by Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia, the report dated Aug 4 appears to have been prepared by the department's assistant director in charge of planning and strategies at its enforcement division.

The report is meant to “clarify” what occurred when 13 Jais and 20 police personnel carried out an operation at the Dream Centre of the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) on Aug 3.

This follows a similar leak a few days earlier of a video of the same operation.

NONEHowever, Malaysiakini cannot as yet confirm the authenticity and source of the report.

Reiterating Jais' stand that the multiracial fundraising dinner hosted by social welfare NGO Harapan Komuniti was not 'raided' by the enforcement officers, the report states that negotiations lasting an hour were held with the organisers to persuade them to facilitate Jais' investigations into the presence of Muslims at the function.

“We had our discussions outside the hall and let the programme then taking place proceed,” says the report, which runs into several pages.

Relating how the organisers equivocated between denying and diverting from the issue of Muslims being present at the function, the report also said the enforcement officers were forced to seize the attendance book after requests for information on those who had registered for the dinner were rejected.

'Suspicious' elements

Given that invitations were specially extended to a number of Muslims, the report says the dinner contained elements that raised “suspicions” that there were efforts to confuse Muslims as to the religious nature of the programme while “hiding” behind a supposedly multiracial '1Malaysia' dinner.

There were bunga manggar flowers - usually associated with Malay celebrations - a number of the organisers who are non-Muslims were clad baju kebaya and baju kurung, and two songs, “Alhumdulillah” and “Allahuakbar” were sung during the function.

NONEWhen the Jais officers were allowed into the hall, the report says, a male speaker was relating about his Muslim background and was "in the midst of talking about his conversion to Christianity".

“One of the organisers who claimed to be one of the key organisers told a Jais enforcement officer that “I believe in God” when asked her religion, and refused to profess to being a Muslim, although her MyKad stated her religion to be Islam.

Jais and police personnel were subsequently able to stop three Muslims from stealthily leaving the function with the help of organisers.

That was also the time when crumpled up copies of a 'quiz' on Islamic matters were found.

The report also lists the names - and partially - MyKad numbers of the 12 Muslims present at the dinner.

The 12 were subsequently asked by Jais to record their statements and assist in the authorities' investigations into the matter.

The report ends by reiterating that the enforcement team did not “raid” the premises, that Jais and the organisers had mutually agreed the inspection would take place after the dinner had concluded, and that Jais was not responsible for the presence of the journalists who had arrived towards the tail-end of the operation. - Malaysiakini
