KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Lorrain Esme Osman, the ex-chairman of the scandal-hit Bumiputra Malaysia Finance (BMf), has reportedly died in London on Monday. He was 79.
Utusan Malaysia quoted his friend, Datuk Zuraidah Atan as saying she got the news of Lorrain’s death from a a mutual friend in London.
“I was told he died due to cancer,” she said.
It is understood that Lorrain died while receiving treatment at a London hospital.
Zuraidah, who is an adviser to the National Cancer Society Malaysia, said she last met Lorrain in 2009.
The former lawyer turned banker was involved in the BMf scandal which broke the former Bank Bumiputra unit due to a RM2.5 billion loss in the 1980s.
Lorrain was freed from a Hong Kong prison in 1993 after serving a year’s jail.
He admitted guilt to conspiring to give loans to George Tan, whose Carrian Group’s business activities caused the merchant bank’s collapse.
