Anifah: No confirmation on who fired shot that killed Bernama man

PUTRAJAYA - There has been no confirmation of who fired the shot that killed BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor in Mogadishu, Somalia, early this month.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said that initial investigations indicated the shot came from the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), but no conclusion has been reached.

Noramfaizul, 39, was killed on Sept 2, when a four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying the Malaysian media was hit by what was reported as a stray bullet.

The cameraman and others in the media were in Somalia covering the Putera 1Malaysian Club humanitarian mission to the famine-stricken country.

A TV3 cameraman, Aji Saregar Mazlan, was hurt in the incident.

"The authorities in Somalia cannot get confirmation, as they do not have the cooperation of the Amisom members," Anifah said, speaking to reporters at the Foreign Ministry's Aidilfitri open house here last night.

"We have asked them to investigate so it will not happen again."

Anifah said the shot might been a case of friendly-fire, adding: "Such a thing has happened in Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries."

"That's why I have said that danger is always there when going to country such as Somalia, no matter how much we have taken precautions."

When asked about the club's decision to return to Somalia next month to continue with the mission, Anifah said Wisma Putra was prepared to contact the authorities there to make sure the volunteers are protected.

"Nevertheless, we've also informed the volunteers of the risks involved," he said.

The club's president, Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, announced recently that the mission would return to Somalia, where they will name a refugee camp after the slain cameraman.
