GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is demanding an explanation from national news agency Bernama over a news report that alleged he made degrading statements on Johor.

Lim said he would give Bernama a reasonable period of time to give a reply, failing which he would resort to legal action.

"I wish to clarify that I did not make any statement regarding Johor during the radio interview in Australia and I don't know where it came from.

"They should clarify as they reported on the news which was picked up by other media.

"Tell me what I said in Australia and when I mentioned Johor in the interview.

"I have two witnesses (my assistants) and I can also ask the interviewer to confirm this," he said after opening a charity food fair at Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged at Sungai Dua here Sunday.

Lim, in an interview with an Australian radio station, was alleged to have remarked that Johor was not a safe place, where chances of being kidnapped were high, in a report carried by Bernama.

Following the report, Lim came under fire from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said he should not undermine other states, while Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman was reported to have accused Lim of having a "siege mentality".

Lim said Abdul Ghani should seek truth from facts and not make accusations.

"How am I suppose to respond on something that I had not say?" he asked.
