MCMC probes 'Kedai 1Malaysia' YouTube video

Following a report lodged by DAP, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has started its investigation into a YouTube video presentation which accuses DAP of plotting price hikes.

NONEZairil Khir Johari (left), political secretary to party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who had lodged the report on Aug 10, was called by the commission to give his statement today in Kuala Lumpur.

“The officers asked me whether I have any idea who is behind the video. I said probably it is done by the political enemies of DAP who have substantial financial capability as the video is professionally made with professional actors,” he said when contacted.

According to Zairil, the MCMC officers also agreed that the video titled'Sembang Rakyat - Kedai 1Malaysia' is of high quality and budget, and it is not done by amateurs.

“They also admitted that a YouTube video is very hard to trace, but they will try to do profiling of the actors in the video and other methods to determine the source.”

azlanThe clip which runs for slightly over eight minutes, features a conversation between a multi-racial cast of characters at a coffee shop in an unidentified village.

Their chatter revolves around the 1Malaysia shops and their moderately priced goods, and the 'stars' go on to provide their own explanations as to why the prices of goods are currently rising.

A man, playing the character of a Chinese trader called Lim, tells the cast that the DAP was in cahoots with Chinese businessmen and conspired with them to increase the prices of goods in the country.

This, 'Lim' candidly explains, is to raise the anger of the rakyat against the BN-led government.

Zairil reiterated that the video is trying to inflame racial sentiments and incite hatred among different ethnic communities, which prompted him to file reports with both MCMC and the police.

However, the police have yet to contact him over his report.

A search on theYouTube website found that the user 'Kawasaki9722' who uploaded the clip, continued to release at least six more clips under the series 'Sembang Rakyat'.

The clip that irked DAP has received 97,320 views so far.
