MP: Certain Islamic bodies plotting to topple S'gor MB

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad today raised suspicion of a plot by certain Islamic bodies to unseat Pakatan Rakyat-ruled Selangor's Menteri Besar, Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

His suspicion arose from word that a "special meeting" was held by the bodies to discuss the MB's approach to the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) search of a church in Petaling Jaya on Aug 3.

generation 709 220711 khalid samad"I understand that a special meeting was held among Muslim NGOs, Jais, Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (Mais) chairperson (Mohd) Adzib (Isa) and representatives of the Attorney-General's Chambers.

"They discussed a memorandum to be sent to the (Selangor) Sultan, attacking the MB on the issue of Christianisation. It appears to be a concerted effort to topple the MB," Khalid (left) said in his blog.

However, Khalid, who is Selangor PAS deputy commissioner, was scant on details, saying that he only hoped that no Pakatan Rakyat executive council member, especially from PAS, was involved.

Three of the Selangor exco members are from PAS - Halimah Ali (Education, Higher Education and Human Development), Iskandar Samad (Housing, Building Structure Administration and Squatters) and Hasan Ali (Islamic Affairs, Malay Culture, Infrastructure and Public Amenities).

The MP, who has been vocal against Jais for its Aug 3 'raid' on a dinner event at the Damansara Utama Methodist Church, also noted that it was strange that such moves were occurring now and not during the term of BN Menteri Besar Mohd Khir Toyo

"When BN, during Khir's time, was robbing Selangor, everyone was silent, be it Mais, Jais, the Attorney-General's Chambers or anyone claiming to be representing the palace.

"But with an MB now who takes care of the people's welfare and is not corrupt in power, all sorts of excuses are used to attack him," Khalid said.

Dragging the sultan into it?

He also pointed out that during BN's rule, the Selangor Sultan would rarely get involved in the state administration, except in customary functions.

"Now, the sultan is often featured rebuking the MB. That is how Umno behaves. When Umno is unpopular, it gives credence to the sultan, when it before derided the ruler," he said, fearing that the sultan would continue to be "dragged" into Umno's politics.

Ever critical of Jais, Khalid also took the opportunity to take potshots at the Islamic department for asking for another month to submit its report on the DUMC affair.

"(The extension) gives a negative impression of the professionalism of Jais, which was able to act quick to 'search' the church, but is slow to present a report on its action.

"The tip-off on proselytising being carried out at the church came from an anonymous source... did the source act with malice? Let us continue to wait for the Jais report, which must be top notch as it is taking months to complete," he said.

Yesterday, Khalid said the Jais report was expected to be ready bySept 16, which is the date he will return from a business trip to Germany.
