The Auditor General’s report released this week has only proved that prime minister Najib Razak’s transformation programmes and pledge to overcome financial weaknesses were nothing but "hot air", said parliamentary Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The former Finance minister said the weaknesses in 32 ministries and Federal departments as well as seven government-linked companies was due to the absence of an effective monitoring system and lack of skilled labour.
“The AG’s report has exposed and proved the failure of the prime minister’s transformation policy,” he added.
He pointed out imbalances and misappropriation found in 45 government projects which are meant to help the lower-income group.
“The poorly managed Poverty Eradication Programme under the Implementation Coordination Unit in Prime Minister’s Department with an allocation of RM691.52 million, has been found to have failed to meet 54.4 percent of its objective,” he said.
According to Anwar, the AG’s revelation that Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry ministry had failed to pay some RM110.67 in incentives to rice farmers was another instance of how the poor was being shortchanged.
Anwar said a meaningful reform of the system could only come through "great political will”
“Without commitment, perseverance and public participation, all policies are bound to fail,” he added.
Earlier, PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the Auditor-General's annual warnings over mismanagement of public funds could not "jolt" the BN government, adding that only a change in the government in the next general election could set things right.
