A PKR member of parliament has questioned the doublefold increase in the cost of the construction for the sprawling new National Palace at Jalan Duta, and asked whether it was to enrich UMNO's cronies.
The cost of palace increased 100 percent from RM400 million to RM800 million.
Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail pointed out a trend to request for additional budget after a budget for a specific project was approved.
Azan said the increase in construction cost was most likely to finance UMNO’s election campaign.
The construction of the palace has been awarded to Maya Maju (M) Sdn Bhd, owned by former Merbok UMNO treasurer Man bin Mat, and was originally worth RM394,803,200.00.
Maya Maju is said to be listed as a dormant company with no track record or PKK license, a compulsory requirement to be considered by the Public Works Department (JKR).
The project which was supposed to be completed in November last year was subsequently delayed to February this year, with a cost increase reaching RM811.2 million.
