Nothing to shout about, says Aziz Bari

The law professor does not see any reason to celebrate the lifting of his suspension from the International Islamic University

PETALING JAYA: Law professor Abdul Aziz Bari today shrugged off the International Islamic University’s decision to lift its suspension order against him, saying there was nothing to celebrate because he was still under investigation for allegedly making a statement detrimental to the university.

He said it was wrong in the first place for the university to suspend him without waiting for his response to the show-cause letter it had issued.

“Normally people are given time to defend themselves without getting suspended,” he said.

Last week, the university suspended Aziz and barred him from its campus over a comment he made about a decree issued by the Sultan of Selangor, which absolved the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) of any fault in its raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) in August.

On Friday, hundreds of students demonstrated at the university’s campus in Gombak in support of Aziz. It is believed that it was in response to the protest as well as criticism from the Deputy Higher Education Minister that the university decided to lift the suspension yesterday.

Aziz said that although he was allowed to resume his duties at the university, his mind was too troubled to pay much attention to them.

“The police came to my house and confiscated my computer,” he said. “How am I not to be troubled by this?”
