'Anwar sex tapes' distributed in Penang mosques

Muslims who attended Friday prayers in several mosques in Seberang Perai last week were shocked to find copies of the sex video recording allgedly involving Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim placed at prominent places leading into the mosques.

Guar Perahu mosque chairperson Abu Bakar Dakilani Abu Hassan, said about 50 copies of the sex tapes were found in at least eight mosques on the mainland.

Abu Bakar said the VCDs, with green covers, were placed at the entrances to the mosques, but nobody has been able to identify the culprits who put the tapes there.

He said many of those at the mosques took the VCDs as the words "Wasiat Tok Guru" written on the cover were taken as referring to PAS spiritual adviser and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

"But they were shocked when they played the tape when they got home and found that it was a sex video, allegedly involving Anwar (in a sexual tryst) with a woman," he told Malaysiakini.

Muslims rally against sex tape

The sex video created waves when it first surfaced in March, claiming to feature Anwar, who denied that he was the character in the tape.

The video was screened to selected journalists by a group of three individuals dubbed 'Datuk T' - former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and former Perkasa treasurer Shuaib Lazim.

The controversial trio were charged in a Kuala Lumpur magistrate's court in June and slapped with a fine of up to RM5,500.

Nevertheless, several other versions of the tape have surfaced on the Internet.

Anwar, who has vehemently denied any sexual tryst as alleged, has lodged a police report on the video recording and is currently beinginvestigated by police for "false information".

Meanwhile, about 100 people held a rally protesting the distribution of the sex tape at mosques for some 30 minutes outside the Guar Perahu mosque.

Abu Bakar said the protest was to show how angry Muslims were about the distribution of the sex tape.

'Disgraceful and immoral'

"The people rallied to condemn and to show their anger at the rudeness and bad manners of those who have desecrated the sanctity of the mosque with this act," he said.

"We also want to give a clear message to those who distributed the VCDs that their action is disgraceful and immoral."

Abu Bakar and two other mosque chairpersons from Sungai Lembu and Kubang Semang lodged a report at the Kubang Semang police station.

"We want the police to investigate the matter seriously and catch the culprits who have destroyed the good name of the mosques," he added.
