Declassify cabinet minutes on NFC, says PKR

PKR today demanded that the government declassify minutes from cabinet meetings involving decisions made on the controversial National Feedlot Centre project.

According to its chief of strategy Rafizi Ramli, this is to show if Women and Family Development Minister Shahrizat Jalil was involved in the decision to award the RM250 mil project to a company owned by her family member.

“How extensive was her involvement? Did she or did she exclude herself from the decision. The government should not be afraid of disclosing cabinet papers. That would be a good start,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference today, Rafizi said the disclosure should be led by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak himself.

Rafizi said any evidence of Shahrizat’s involvement in the decision-making points to conflict of interest, especially since the company had not at a press conference yesterday denied its inexperience in industry.

“We deserve to know, especially if there were no repayment terms set out for the RM250 million government loan disbursed,” he said

azlan“The agreement for the project was signed in 2008 and Shahrizat was a cabinet minister at that point.”

Yesterday, at a press conference, NFC executive chairperson Mohamad Salleh Ismail, who is also Shahrizat’s husband, also said the couple have never discussed the project.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, in response to calls for Shahrizat to resign, also claimed that the latter was not involved in the project, for which RM181 million of the total loan has been given.

Dead cows

Citing figures gleaned from “genuine sources”, Rafizi said that the company’s lack of experience caused more than a hundred dead cattle.

While he does not show the original financial statements from which the figures were purportedly obtained, Rafizi revealed that 121 heads of cattle died or had to be slaughtered due to sickness.

Comparatively, 113 heads of cattle were slaughtered for meat and sold.

“For every cow that can be sold or were of use to the business, a corresponding cow died. The financial cost of the 121 cows which died due to weakness in operations is RM542,000,” he said.

Of the 4,141 heads of cattle brought in from Australia, eight cattle died on board the ship, 15 died on the way to the NFC premises in Gemas from Port Klang, and 42 had died at the feedlot centre, while 45 had to be slaughtered due to complications. Eleven were given away as gifts.

Rafizi said in 2009, no cows were brought in but 137 had died or had to be slaughtered due to complications, resulting in a loss of RM613,897.

Some 1,562 cattle were slaughtered for meat for sale.

“The real issue is about accountablity, responsibility, conflict of interest and the trust that we have in our government’s ability to govern the rakyat’s money.

“It's not about the cows. It’s about the arrogance of people in the highest echelons of government who easily take RM250 million without collateral and use the money as if it is their own,” he said.
