'Trimming civil service will lead to downfall of Malays'

Utusan Malaysia senior editor Zaini Hassan warned that the history of the fall of Malay dominance will repeat should DAP’s proposal to trim the civil service is implemented.

In his weekly column published today, the controversial writer blamed the BN government for being “too nice” to allow the civil servants to “revolt against the government which pays their salary, allowance, bonus and various incentives”.

“However, this is the Malaysian civil service. They don’t care about the political beliefs of their staff. They take for granted that all civil servants are loyal supporters to the government of the day.

“This is one of the nice things about the BN government. They assume all their staff are their supporters. But they are wrong, there are also senior government servants at higher level who wave flags other than the scale,” read the article entitled Musang Berbulu Ayam II: Sejarah Melayu bakal berulang (Wolves in sheep’s clothing II: Malay history will repeat).

Since DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua was reported to have said during a public forum in Johor that Pakatan will gradually trim down the over-bloated civil service if the coalition takes over Putrajaya, the Umno-owned Malay daily has been harping on the issue, warning that it will jeopardise the political and economic position of the Malays and bumiputera.

According to Pua, the 1.3 million-strong civil service is 4.6 percent of Malaysian population, one of the highest in the region, which has a average figure of about 2 percent.

NONEElaborating the ‘conspiracy theory’ in his columnpublished in September that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has sent his men to infiltrate strategic government bodies to topple the current administration, Zaini (left) said it is not unusual for DAP to place non-Malays into the civil service with the help of these ‘enemies within’.

He then accused that any BN-supporting government servant in states ruled by Pakatan Rakyat will be persecuted.

“They come to work everyday like fools because they have no work that can be done or no meeting that can be attended. Eventually they will retire early or flee away.”

‘Effort to sideline Malay civil servants’

Zaini also claimed that effort to sideline Malay civil servants has started by the DAP-ruled Penang state government such as the replacement of retired Malay staff in state investment arm Penang Development Corporation with non-Malays.

“Six or seven months ago Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy once said that BN has placed too many Malay civil servants and it is time to correct it.”

In a sarcastic tone, Zaini said the Malays only have themselves to be blamed for today’s situation because they had allowed DAP to come into power.

“For me, I don't blame DAP. DAP is a smart political party. Using the Malays - PAS, PKR and other Malays - for their interest is smart.

“It seems like the history of the fall of Malays will repeat. However, as one of the Malays that occupy 60 percent of this country, I don’t blame other people.”
