Mahfuz: It appears Hasan is declaring war on PAS

PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar likens former Selangor PAS commissioner Hasan Ali’s questioning the party’s welfare state concept to declaring war on the Islamist party.

Mahfuz said the welfare state concept was agreed on by the annual party muktamar and hence it should not be questioned now.

“If he questions this concept now, it appeared that Hasan is declaring war against PAS as it is inappropriate to question a decision made in the muktamar,” he said.
He queried whether what PAS did was wrong as Islam also promotes the concept of a welfare state.

Mahfuz, however, stopped short of asking Hasan to leave the party, saying that he can determine his own future in the party.

“There is no need for me to give any advice as he is a well-known motivational speaker. He can decide for himself. But if I were him I would ‘angkat kaki’ (leave).”

Mahfuz said this during a press conference following Hasan’s disclosure yesterday alleging, among others, that the non-ulama are taking the Islamist party off course and that shifting its key policy from the ‘Islamic state’ to one of a ‘unity government’ and eventually to the current ‘welfare state’ is a deviation.
He also slammed Hasan as a hypocrite for claiming that the non-ulama are taking over the leadership of the party, hence deviating from its cause.

Mahfuz stressed that the top leadership of PAS, president Abdul Hadi Awang and spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, are both ulama. Hence the issue of non-ulama taking over the party has never arisen.
