Sacked UPSI student stays put in Uni

One of the students expelled from a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) residential college says she will stay on in the hostel until official notice is given.

siti nurul piteriah abd halim UPSI sacked studentSiti Nurul Piteriah Abdul Halim (left), who was present at the student demonstration outside UPSI in Tanjung Malim on Jan 1, said she was merely given a verbal notice from the college fellow, who cited orders "from above".

"I'm still at the college.

"As long as there is no (official) notice, I will make my stand there. That is my right," the Malay literature degree student said today.

Siti Nurul said she was told to leave, with immediate effect, at 9.30pm, after she was released the evening after the demonstration.

She also identified the other student reported to have beenexpelled as diploma student Alif Ashraf.
Siti Nurul was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference by student leaders outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, where Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia president Ahmad Syukri Ab Razab demanded that UPSI reinstates the two.

NONE“Withdraw the order, or face even stronger pressure from students,” Ahmad Syukri (right) warned.

In addition, he condemned the police for denying that the students were assaulted before an investigation was made, and for allegedly telling student leader Muhammad Safwan Anang to sign a document stating that he suffered his injuries in a fall.

A scuffle broke out during the demonstration, during which, the Gerakan Menuntut Kebabasan Akademik president alleged, he was assaulted by police before he collapsed and started convulsing, resulting in his hospitalisation.

Also speaking at the conference, Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia president Akram Ikrami Taib Azamudden demanded that the prime minister, the inspector-general of police and the Perak police chief apologise for the incident.

Persatuan Kebangsaan Pelajar Islam Malaysia president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said that the incident was a prelude of what was to come under the Peaceful Assembly Bill once it is gazetted.

"This is a guarantee that people who attend peaceful assemblies would not be spared by the police," he said, adding that the Bill does not clearly specify the procedures for dispersing assemblies.

Responding to allegations that the students were manipulated by opposition politicians, he clarified that the statements and the demands by thestudent groups are based on discussions and forums among the students themselves.
