‘AIMST should come clean on contracts’

An Indian NGO says there are the allegations that the university practices cronyism in awarding contracts.
PETALING JAYA: An Indian NGO wants the MIC to make public information on the contractors for the AIMST University to clear allegations of cronyism.
People’s Welfare and Rights Coalition (Power) said that it has found out that only MIC members are beneficiaries of many contracts .
“Even in many cases, only MIC members are recruited as staff. For example, the Head of Marketing is the son of a senior MIC leader from Perak,” said S Gobi Krishnan, the chairman of Power.
Gobi Krishnan said that there has also been allegations that major maintenance, security and canteen contracts have been given to some “closely connected leaders of MIC Youth”.
“The maintenance and security contract was allegedly given under closed tender to a national MIC Youth leader, whereas the canteen contract was given to a Penang MIC Youth leader,” alleged Gobi Krishan.
He said that the the canteen contract was said to be worth about RM5 million annually and this would mean an income of some RM5.4 million per year.
He said the “huge”canteen contract calculations were based on RM5 per student per day multiplied by 30 days and multiplied by 3,000 students, which comes up to to RM450,000 per month.
“As such, it begs questions whether this huge contract was awarded through a transparent system. If it is so, we request AIMST University to reveal the details of the recipient, the list of other tenderers, the criteria used to select the recipient company and their experiences in Food and Beverage (F&B),” urged Gobi Krishnan.
Gobi Krishnan said the AIMST University could have broken down the canteen contract to many sub-contracts to ensure more Indians benefitted.
Gobi Krishnan pointed out that the AIMST University was founded by the MIC for more Indians to have the opportunity for higher education and was built with donations from the government and public.
“The public donated millions to build AIMST University. It is also a public knowledge that even members of PKR dan DAP contributed funds for this effort,” he said.
Gobi Krishnan said if AIMST University does not come clean, or if its explanation is unsatisfactory, his organisation would not hesitate to make an official report with the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC).
AIMST University, in Kedah, was set up about 10 years ago by MIC’s education arm, the Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED).
