The Court of Appeal has reduced the jail sentence of two brothers found guilty in the arson of the Metro Tabernacle Church in 2010.
In upholding the guilty verdict handed by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, the Court of Appeal unanimously ruled that the five-year jail term was “excessive” and was reduced to two-years.
Justice Low Hop Bing, who chaired the three-member panel, noted that the accused - Raja Muhammad Faizal and Raja Muhammad Idzham - were first-time offenders and were young at the time of the offence.
The judge adds that the court had considered that no one was harmed during the incident.
"We are of the view that custodial sentence is necessary but five years is excessive," he said, reported Star Online.
