DBKL: Public funds not used to fete minister

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has denied diverting public funds allocated for residents' associations (RAs) to programmes involving Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

NONEIn a statement toMalaysiakiniyesterday, DBKL said the allegation by Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was "inaccurate and untrue".

DBKL said it only provides logistical assistance and food for local social programmes "based on (the) available allocation".

This is on top of the RM5,000 cash contribution a year to support the social activities of active RAs registered with the Registrar of Societies.
DBKL also said the programmes of the NGOs and DBKL were aimed at meeting social development objectives.

NONEIt said Raja Nong Chik (left) had attended these events on the invitation of the organisers.

"His attendance is in his capacity as a minister, as entrusted by the government, and not for political purposes," it said.

Last Friday, Nurul Izzahhighlighted complaints by constituents that they could not get assistance allocated by DBKL for RAs because the funds had been used to fete the minister.

Confirming this, Putra Ria Apartment RA committee member Abd Rahim Mohd Noor had said a fire prevention campaign had to be cancelled last April after DBKL said there was no money left to provide food and logistical assistance.

Abd Rahim said a DBKL officer that the RA dealt with informed them that RM10,000 allocated for assistance to RAs last year had been used for two events, including one by a local Umno branch that involved Raja Nong Chik.
