The Deputy Prime Minister is a Malay, the chief graft enforcer is a Malay and the High Court judge who sat on my election petition for the Hulu Selangor by-election is also a Malay. They all have something in common: to them the Barisan Nasional paying money for votes does not constitute bribing.
The Deputy PM and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commmision chief both say that the RM500 payment under the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia programme is not a bribe. The judge meanwhile, said that for me to succeed in my petition I had to prove, among other things, that the people were induced into voting for the BN. To him, the Prime Minister’s many speeches during the by-election offering millions for voter support was not evidence. He dismissed my petiton. As long as Malays have leaders who are morally opaque and who are unable to understand what bribery is, their destiny and that of other Malaysians is doomed.
The future Prime Minister described the RM500 payout as a way of giving people’s money back to them. He did not of course tell you that before the cash is paid out, UMNO chiefs give lengthy lectures and exhort recipients to be grateful to and vote for the BN. The chief graft enforcer, whom I mistakenly thought was a decent bloke, also said the payment was not a bribe but part of the Government’s generosity. He said it was up to the people to decide if they were happy or not. But it’s not about happiness Dato’ Seri – it’s about buying votes.
To the future PM, all I can say is if you really want to return money to the people, return all of it and not just RM500. Let us get back the RM750 billion that the crooks have stolen in the last 20 years. I will settle for a payment of RM100,000 to each family and we will all work hard to secure the BN’s victory at the next General Election. The Government will dispute my figures so for the benefit of the public, why don’t we have an independent commission to determine exactly how much has been taken unlawfully. Not that the Commission will ever be established, but I am making this call in case some BN heroes want to take up my offer for a public debate on how much money has been lost due to corruption and abuse of power.
To Malaysians, especially the Malays, just bear it for a few more months. I know life is hard and food prices have hit the roof, so take the RM500 – but don’t sell your future and more importantly, don’t sell your self worth. Hang Jebat would be upset if you do. - partikita.com
