The imam who flung shoes at the judges' bench of the Federal Court on Wednesday, after his appeal was turned down, says he did it to put the spotlight on the lost dignity of the judiciary.
Recounting the incident in an interview with Malaysiakini yesterday, Hoslan Hussain said it was a "spontaneous" move of protest against the three-man apex court bench led by Justice Zulkifli Ahmad Makinuddin.
"As an imam, I could not curse them. So what I could only do was to fling the shoes," said the 46-year-old father of seven.
Hoslan (right) said the Malaysian judiciary was flawed, with judges giving the impression they were not upholding justice.
"I am the first imam ever to have been brought to the Federal Court, and that's because I raised an issue affecting the mosque and its community," said the former imam of Ar-Rahimah mosque in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
In the Wednesday morning incident, he said, the judges immediately withdrew from the court after the incident. Once he had calmed down, he was asked by the police to leave.
It is learnt that the three-member bench did not initiate any contempt order against Hoslan.

History of his dismissal
Hoslan was in Federal Court to appeal against a court order filed by the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council (MAIWP) to evict him from his quarters in the Ar-Rahimah mosque compound.

However, Justice Zulkifli struck out his appeal following an objection raised by the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council (MAIWP) lawyer Zulkefli Che Yong that Hoslan's affidavit had been filed outside the time-frame allowed.
MAIWP said Hoslan was dismissed in 2008 for disciplinary problems, including openly wearing a vest with the PAS logo at a workshop for imams and for "competing" with the local khatib (the one who delivers the Friday sermon) and other imams for the job.
His actions had been deemed as embarrassing to the mosque's administration, according to the Jawi report on him.
In the fallout, he was ordered to give a statement to Jawi in May 16, 2008, and was subsequently dismissed.

"As I continued to stay in the quarters, they cut off the power and water supply," Hoslan said.
This was followed by MAIWP's application for an eviction order.
'Moved out from quarters'
However, Hoslan claimed that he was dismissed because he could not see eye-to-eye with the mosque committee members, many of whom were Umno members.
"I was very vocal over the way they handled funds. I exposed many wrongdoings of the previous committee members, and later they were dismissed en masse in 2006," he claimed.
However, he added, the committee was replaced by another batch of Umno members who, he claimed, are equally bad.
Asked what he would do after his legal avenues had been exhausted, Hoslan replied that he had actually vacated his quarters.
"I moved out from there after they cut off the power supply. But most of my belongings are still there as the abuse of funds case has not been resolved.
"I also don't see a valid reason for Jawi sacking me," he said.

Hoslan now stays in a PPR flat on Jalan Cochrane with his family and has been appointed imam for a neighbourhood mosque.
