MP to cops: Show and shame hate-poster vandals on Facebook

February 07, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 — The police could curb the recent hate-poster spree in Taman Tun Dr Ismail by uploading closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of those who have been putting up “defamatory” posters of Lim Guan Eng and Bersih 2.0 leaders on the Internet, the suburban township’s MP said today.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said this would serve as an effective deterrent against future crimes as the “wannabe criminals” will think twice before targeting the middle-class residential neighbourhood.
He said this would also prove that CCTV cameras installed in the area as part of the government’s Safe City Programme (SCP) last October were still functioning.
“If the CCTV was working at that time, the real footage of the incident should have been recorded,” the opposition DAP lawmaker told reporters at Taman Tun Dr Ismail wet market.
Lim (picture) stressed that if police were reluctant to release the footage because the matter was still under investigation, they could mask the faces of those caught on camera.
“It (masking) can be done easily. That’s not an excuse,” he said, adding that the police should upload the video on their Facebook page as soon as possible.
Lip Eng added that while he respected everyone’s right to disagree with Guan Eng’s politics, putting up hate posters was not the right way to air their views.
Such grouses can be “properly aired” by holding a peaceful assembly election reforms group Bersih 2.0 had done last year and not by disseminating posters that were not only “defamatory” but violated local government by-laws on vandalism, the lawyer said.
Posters depicting DAP secretary-general Guan Eng as a “racist” and Bersih leaders Datuk S. Ambiga and A. Samad Said as supporters of gay sex appeared at bus stops in Taman Tun Dr Ismail last Saturday.
Most of the posters were taken down the same day, while the rest were removed by volunteers, opposition party members and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) today.
Police took 10 men into custody for questioning in connection to the derogatory posters before releasing them on bail.
