Najib, Rosmah bestowed silat awards
Prime Minister Najib Razak was today bestowed the "Imam Khalifah Agong Gayong" award by the Pertubuhan Seni Silat Pusaka Gayong Malaysia (PSSPGM).
The martial arts organisation's highest award, which carries the title of "Sri Tri Buana Gangga Simanjakani Chula Sakti", was presented by PSSPGM president, Raja Abdul Majid Raja Mat Isa.
Najib's wife, Rosmah Mansor, was presented an award which carries the title of "Sri Pelangi Srikandi Utama" at a massive PSSPGM gathering held at the Kriss Modenas sports complex, in Gurun, Kedah.
In his address after the presentation of the awards, Najib said the government would help to promote the martial art into a proud heritage.
In this connection, he said, a foundation would be set up in the name of silat gayong founder Meor Abd Rahman and the government would provide an appropriate financial allocation.
"The struggle of silat gayong is closely associated with that of Umno; it is an endless struggle," he said.
He said silat gayong is a reflection of Malay unity and a struggle in the name of the community, religion and country.
"Malay unity is the foundation of national unity, and unity through silat gayong is a part of Malay unity," said the prime minister, who was on a day-long visit to Kedah.
Najib said silat gayong is not confined to merely portraying outward appearance and physical strength but has to inherit the spirit of the struggle and identity of the exponents over the generations.
