Najib tears into Anwar's Islamic credentials

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today ripped opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's Islamic credentials before a largely Muslim audience.
Without naming Anwar, the premier took potshots at the opposition leader for his statements that had raised the ire of some sections in the Muslim community.

"it is important for us to champion Muslim interests especially in the face of challenges and statements by a particular leader which we find weird.

"When a statement is made that the country's sex laws has to be amended because it is archaic, we wonder why Allah's law cannot be transformed into normal laws which govern men.

"Is Allah's law archaic?" he said at the National Gathering of Ulama, Islamic Scholars and Virtual Writers in Kuala Lumpur.

NONE"Even in Singapore, a non-Muslim country, they said the amendment was not necessary, but back here, there is a leader who wants to amend the law," he added to the crowd of over 400.

Anwar (right) had during an interview with BBC was asked if he was willing to push equality as far as homosexual rights, to which he said Malaysians were committed to the marriage between men and women but punitive archaic laws should be looked at.

'Pakatan parties sleeping with each other'

"Therefore it is important of Muslims to unite in terms of our stance, if the stance is not consistent with the struggle, if Palestine' s security sits below Israel's security, then this is something very weird for Muslims," he said.

Najib was referring to a separate interview on Anwar in the 'Wall Street Journal', in which he was quoted as expressing support for Israel's security on condition that the Jewish state respects the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

The premier also took velied potshots at Pakatan Rakyat, describing the relationship of the three component parties as promiscuous.

"When there is a political party who sleeps on the same pillow with other political parties, they have different dreams but they are already berkhalwat (having a promiscuous relationship)... when you vote for that party, the parties sleeping on the same pillow will benefit.

"Do you understand what I mean? There is no need for me to elaborate more," he added smilingly.

Making reference to the Malaysian Chinese at the Political Crossroad conference yesterday, Najib said Muslims are also at a crossroad in the face of a looming general election.

"If the Chinese have their debate on political crosssroads, Muslims too have their crossroad, their choice must be someone who can guarantee the strength and purity of Islam," he said.
