Ahmad Zahid trusts Thai-based Weststar’s 4WDs

March 09, 2012
BAGAN DATOH, March 9 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi rejected claims military-supplier Weststar Group was ill-suited to supply the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles.
He said Thailand’s Pattaya-based Weststar was a Malaysian company, and an international supplier, as countries like United States, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia procured Weststar vehicles.
He spoke to reporters today after visiting the the Malaysian Cocoa Board’s Cocoa Research and Development Centre here today.
Ahmad Zahid (picture) said the vehicles were bought because the cost of spare parts per existing vehicle was three times than the price of a new vehicle. These new 4WD vehicles are expected to reduce maintenance repairs by two thirds, said the minister.
He said Weststar Group managing director Tan Sri Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim assured him that the vehicles will be utilising local components.
Ahmad Zahid announced that its military 4WD vehicles are being replaced after meeting his Thai counterpart Sukumpol Suwanatat in Bangkok on Monday.
