Have you been stopped by police? Most of us wont ask to verify the police personnel's identity even if we know it is our right.
A BERSIH 2.0 activist in Kelantan did that and he was pushed to the ground and stepped on his head. He then suffered a mini Abu Ghraib in police lock-up.
When he protested after his release, he was fined RM 400 for the protest. Now, he is sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment for questioning the policeman's identity ("obstructing public officer"). His wife is now left alone to support their three children and soon, two expected twins.
The message aiming at us ordinary Malaysians cannot be clearer: challenge the police and you and your family suffer. Unlike tear gas and water cannon, this is a everyday threat to everyone, whether or not you are an activist.
Are we going to sit there and do nothing? Are we going to leave Ahmad Syauqey Abdul Ghani and his family bear all these and let everyone else learn to be terrified and fear the police? Or will we stand up, raise fund for his case, support his family and mount the pressure to free this Rosa Parks of our own?
