Cops nab counterfeiters

Three African nationals have landed behind bars after striking a deal to hand over counterfeit notes to undercover policemen.
KUALA LUMPUR: Three African nationals who specialise in counterfeit notes paid a heavy price when they picked the wrong “customers”, who happened to be under cover policemen.
It all started with the Africans agreeing to meet their “customers” at a golf club in Jalan Ampang late yesterday evening to hand over RM50 counterfeit notes amounting to more than RM1 million.
A police source said when the Africans returned to their car to pick up the forged notes, a raiding team moved in to arrest the trio.
However, they managed to flee in their car after noticing several plainclothes policemen closing in on them.
“After a brief high-speed car chase, we managed to corner their vehicle and arrest the suspects,” confirmed a police officer atached to the commercial crimes department of Bukit Aman.
Police seized bundles of notes concealed in several bags from the car’s boot.
Initial investigation revealed that the suspects had photocopied the RM50 notes using high resolution photocopier machines.
“This syndicate offered forged notes at a rate of 1:10, where each RM50 genuine note will be paid with RM500 forged currency,” added the officer.
Police also seized laptops and several bankbooks belonging to locals from the suspects, who are currently being detained at the Ampang district police headquarters.
