KUALA LUMPUR- Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said police will increase its presence in public places including public transport locations to combat crime.
He said this move will ensure that the public and users of public transport would feel safe in line with the Six National Key Result Areas (NKRA) to lower the crime rate.
"I've received reports through various channels and this morning I took the LRT (light rail transit) and asked commuters what they feel, all of them say they feel safe," he told reporters after a visit to the Jelatek LRT station, here today.
Ismail also took the train to several other LRT stations and met with people who were commuting to work in the 8am to 10am rush.
He said it was through such walkabouts that he could hear the opinions of public transport users firsthand on safety and suggestions they may have.
"I would like to remind my personnel to be omnipresent so that the police are always strategically located in public places," said Ismail.
He also requested that the Kuala Lumpur police contingent stationed its personnel in appropriate areas to ensure public security and allow them to offer suggestions on how to eliminate crime together.
"I hope the people will not hesitate to tell us how the police can improve our services," he added.
The police underwent changes through the Government Transformation Programme and Malaysia is now the safest country in South-East Asia, while it ranks 19th in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2011.
Police commitment and hard work was proven last year when the overall crime index registered an 11 per cent drop compared to 2010, exceeding the five per cent target.
