BIRMINGHAM: A shoulder injury forced Lee Chong Wei to concede a walkover to his arch rival Lin Dan of China in the men's singles final of the All-England badminton championships at the National Indoor Arena here early on Monday.
Lin Dan took the closely-fought first set 21-19 in 24 minutes. The Chinese ace then went on the attack in the second set.
He was up 6-2 in just five minutes, when Chong Wei decided to call it a day due a shoulder injury that had also affected him during his semi-final victory over South Korea's Lee Hyun-il on Saturday.
With the victory, Lin Dan became the first man in the 33-year Open era to win five All Englands, adding to titles in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
In the post-war era, only Rudy Hartono, eight in the 1960s-70s, and Erland Kops, seven in the 1960s, have won the world's oldest tournament more, when it was regarded as the unofficial world championship. - Star
