KUALA LUMPUR: The prices of goods will not increase following the seven to 13% pay rise for civil servants under the Malaysian Remuneration System announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Thursday, the Government has assured.
Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said traders who indiscriminately hiked prices would be punished under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act.
"Salary increase is not linked to higher prices of goods, which depends on other factors. For instance, fish and fruit depend on weather and imported goods depend on prices from abroad," he said.
He was speaking at a press conference after the first Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Chamber of Commerce and Industry here Friday.
Ismail Sabri said action would be taken under the Act against traders who were not able to justify their price increases.
"We have placed 1,500 officers to monitor the situation nationwide and alerted them to be on the lookout for any hikes after the Prime Minister's announcement," he added. - Bernama
