Cops foot RM1.8m bill for Bersih 3.0
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) suffered losses of RM1.828 million in equipment and assets due to the rally organised by non-governmental organisations and opposition parties in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.
Home Ministry secretary-general Mahmood Adam said apart from the losses, police personnel also had to tolerate all insults and attacks from the rally participants.
"The financial losses can be avoided and the money can be used in more beneficial activities that the rally," he said in a statement today.
Last Saturday, the rally participants had not only breached police barricades to enter Dataran Merdeka, but also a court order which prohibited the public from being in the area between April 28 and May 1.
So far, 513 individuals had been arrested for turning the Saturday's rally into riots, while 49 others were being tracked down.
A total of 14,331 police personnel from various departments were deployed to maintain public order during the rally.
