DON'T APOLOGIZE for Bersih 3.0, police told
KUALA LUMPUR - Police should not entertain any demand for them to apologise over alleged police brutality during the Bersih 3.0 rally as they were merely doing their job.
In saying so, Malaysian Ex-Policemen's Association deputy president Md Yusof Abd Majid slammed the Bar Council for demanding a public apology.
"The Bar Council's report was biased and done quickly, while the police are still investigating the matter," he said after handing over a memorandum to the police asking them not to apologise.
The Bar Council had called an extraordinary general meeting on Friday asking Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar to publicly apologise for "the actions and conduct of the police, including the excessive, indiscriminate and wrongful use of water cannons and tear gas".
Yusof added that the Bar Council should concentrate on the legal profession.
"They are the one who should apologise for coming out with such a judgment about the police.
"Next time, let's have members of the Bar Council to keep law and order during violent demonstration and riots."
Yusof also urged the opposition not to accuse the police of having instigated riots and chaos in the rally.
"They should not have put all the blame on the police as they were just carrying out their duties. As a former policeman myself, I feel disappointed that the sacrifices made by the police are not respected."
