Don’t take unity for granted, DPM tells Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — Malaysians must oppose those who threaten the government’s efforts to achieve unity and stability, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
The deputy prime minister claimed that there were “some parties” who are jealous of the country’s political, social and economical stability achieved by the government and wanted to create anarchy and chaos to disrupt the peace.
“This unity should not be taken lightly and it should also not be easily destroyed by movements or irresponsible actions,” Muhyiddin (picture)said after launching the “Hikayat tiga negara” novel here.
“We in Malaysia should be thankful and feel lucky because the efforts of the unity and co-operation between the different races, spearheaded by the Alliance in 1957... Umno, MCA, MIC have managed to shape the history of this country and its race(s),” he added.
He alleged that there were plans by “certain parties” to disrupt the country’s unity through baseless claims and accusations, but did not specify who he was referring to.
He said wars occurred because of conflicts, power struggles and those who were “power hungry”, and that no one actually wins in these situations.
“For the stability of our beloved country, we must reject all forms of extremism and anarchy which have been created by some parties who are jealous of the racial harmony and the development achieved by the government since the country’s independence,” he said.
