A woman could not vote at the coming general election, after finding out from the Election Commission's online database that her identity has been stolen.
Tamil Malar, bearing the MyKad number 750516-08-5360, was surprised to find that her identity card number now belonged to a man named Mansor b Jali.
Tamil, who lives in Perak's Tronoh state and Batu Gajah parliamentary constituencies, is now listed as Mansor, a voter from Ayer Limau state and Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituencies in Melaka.
Tronoh state assemblyman V Sivakumar was puzzled how this could happen when a voter's information was supposed to be validated with the database of the National Registration Department.
“There are elements of fraud in the electoral roll. I urge EC chairman for an immediate explanation,” he said.
Sivakumar said his team was on a 'ghost-busting' mission to weed out phantom voters in his constituency.
