KUALA LUMPUR: Several Pakatan Rakyat MPs got together today to give moral support to Bersih leader S Ambiga following protests held outside her Damansara Heights house.
Meeting at the house at about 11am today, the 10 MPs and one senator condemned the recent acts of harassment by petty traders and former soldiers. The traders fried burgers outside Ambiga’s house and the army veterans lined up with their backs facing the house and shook their buttocks.
Tumpat MP Kamaruddin Jaafar of PAS said: “We’re here to show our support for Bersih. We are disgusted by those Malaysians for their immoral behaviour, which the authorities seem to be allowing so far.”
The other MPs included Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut), Tan Seng Giaw (DAP-Kepong), Khalid Samad (PAS-Shah Alam and Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai).
They were heartily welcomed by Ambiga.
Speaking to reporters, the Bersih leader commended the police and Kuala Lumpur City Hall for keeping an eye on her house.
“The police and DBKL have been here and I am grateful for them for their level of protection,” she said.
At the junction to her street, a group of more than 10 City Hall officers stood on guard. A few police officers were seen patrolling the area on motorcycles.
The burger-frying traders claimed that the April 28 Bersih 3.0 rally caused them to lose business worth several hundred thousand ringgit. Their spokesman recently said they were planning a second round of burger frying outside Ambiga’s house.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has said that neither the traders nor the ex-soldiers had broken any law.
Nurul Izzah condemned what she called “this selective political persecution” and blasted the police for not stopping the “thuggish behaviour”.
