Hawkers in Negeri Sembilan using government-issued equipment are now barred from hawking their goods near ceramah sessions organised by opposition parties - on the pain of revocation of their licences and the forcible return of their accouterments.
"We don't want to stop them from doing business, but sadly, they are using government-issued facilities and equipment.
"Recently, we found that hawkers used Food and Agriculture Marketing Agency (Fama) umbrellas while hawking their wares at a PAS ceramah in Kampung Bukit Serambai," lamented BN's Klawang assemblyperson Yunus Rahmat during a visit to the Kuala Klawang farmer's market on Monday.
Yunus who is also the Negeri Sembilan executive council member in charge of agriculture, agro-based industries, entrepreneurial and cooperative development, was quoted as saying so in a report yesterday by the online edition of the Malay daily Sinar Harian.
He also called on Fama officers to monitor any such incident and report to him if hawkers using equipment with government agency logos were found selling their goods near opposition ceramah functions.
Other than having their licences revoked, Yunus said, errant hawkers caught doing business at opposition ceramah would also have to return their government-issued equipment.
Abuse of power, decries opposition
In an immediate reaction, Rasah MP Anthony Loke slammed the statement by Yunus, calling it an "abuse of power" by the BN-led state government for partisan purposes.
"The allocations are to help hawkers, it is up to the hawkers where they do business. They have to go where there is opportunity for business.
"If they have to sell their goods at an opposition ceramah, will Yunus buy them new umbrellas and equipment? If their wares are unsold because they can't sell there, will Yunus (right) buy their goods?" lambasted the MP from DAP.
"I ask Yunus: Is the money from supporters of the opposition soharam that hawkers cannot do business there?" Loke asked.
