Reconsider ‘thosai’ plan, says Ambiga

The Bersih co-chairperson says such actions infringe on the privacy of an individual and Malaysians must be respectful of private spaces.
PETALING JAYA: Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga has asked a NGO planning to set up a thosai stall outside Deputy Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar’s house to reconsider its decision.
Despite her residence being the target of such incidents, the former Bar Council president said these actions transgressed the law and amounted to being a public nuisance.
“I strongly urge all to refrain from these acts which infringe on the privacy of an individual. I urge those who are proposing to give the thosai to make them and distribute them to charity,” she told FMT.
“Everyone must work towards making Malaysia a better place for all and we must be respectful of private spaces,” she added.
Yesterday, NGO WargaAMAN announced that it would set up the stall outside Khalid’s house in Ampang on Sunday.
WargaAman said it would distribute the thosai for free to the public in an attempt to promote the dish, which had been declared a heritage food.
Khalid, who welcomed the plan, however, suggested that it be held at a nearby field since his house was not a suitable location.
WargaAMAN’s stall proposal came in the wake of the deputy police chief’s remarks regarding the protests that were held outside Ambiga’s house in Bukit Damansara.
Last week, a group of traders set up a burger stall outside Ambiga’s house and distributed 200 free burgers to protest over the losses incurred during the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28.
Following this, a group claiming to be ex-servicemen staged a vulgar aerobic exercise routine outside her house.
Khalid had later said that no action was taken since the individuals involved did not commit any criminal offence.
WargaAMAN will not back down
Commenting further on the matter, Ambiga stressed that she was not making this stand because she was personally affected but rather because it was the right thing to do.

“These acts infringe upon the rights not only of the person [owner of the house] but also their neighbours. Also whether or not it infringes the law, it infringes on a person’s home and family life.
“While I understand their [WargaAMAN's] stand, I would urge them to reconsider their proposed actions,” she said.
Contacted later, WargaAMAN secretary S Barathidasan said that he respected Ambiga’s views on the matter.
He said the NGO’s committee members would meet this afternoon to decide on whether to proceed with the plan.
He also stressed that the stall was not a counter protest to what happened outside Ambiga’s house but rather an event to promote thosai.
“As said before, we are also providing free lessons on how to make the thosai and we would also invite Khalid to come and learn the art of making thosai as well,” he said.
