SIPITANG DUMPING GROUND FOR FOREIGNERS

SIPITANG : Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said Sipitang has become a dumping ground for foreign labourers from Nepal and India.

“Their presence was visible in the Sipitang town nowadays, said Hj Amde Sidik, who is the Deputy President of SAPP.
Amde, who is also South Zone and Constituency Liaison Committee Chairman for N28 Sindumin said these foreign labourers are recruited by Sabah Forest Industries.

“Nepalese and Indians monopolised the labour sector of SFI, after all, 95 percent of SFI shares belong to an Indian company perhaps that could be the reason why ‘unstoppable’ by anyone,” Amde added.

“These people are willing to work for RM400 per month with airfares and transportation provided for. That low wage puts off our local labourers.

“Ironically, our home grown State Agency, Lembaga Tebung Getah (LTG) based in Kg Mendulung makes no difference,” said Amde when giving a talk to the village community in Kg Mendulung last night.

Almost all recruited foreign rubber tappers are Indonesians and they are better treated than the locals with provision of living quarters and transport fares.

“LTG didn’t fulfil its promise to the local kampong people, said Robert (not his real name).

Earlier, it had been an understanding with the kampong people with regard to land that were taken by the LTG. The revenue meant to be shared between the LGT and the land owners but now LTG made a policy that, we neither have the share nor say, for those who own plantations aren’t even allowed to recruit rubber tappers as the LTG did and in instances allowed, only get 40 percent of the revenue that is very unfair he said”.

And with such huge presence of foreigners it scares local folks, if not addressed could lead to social problems like, kids getting rebellious because of frustration and so forth. - Sabahkini

  1. SFI sebelum ini dimiliki oleh Lion Group, kini ia diambil ahli oleh syarikat dari India, jadi pasti pihak SFI akan mengambil lebih ramai pekerja dari negaranya.

    1. allowing the foreigners to come into the country without proper statistical support would not help the country handle its manpower problem. according to the Human Resources Ministry, there was a need for foreign workers in the plantation, manufacturing and services sectors. the government should increase the minumum wages so that locals would take up the jobs.

  4. government should look at ways to attract Sabahans to work in sectors that are facing shortage of workers instead of taking the easy way out by allowing foreigners to come in.

  5. if only local people are willing to work for RM400 per month, then there will be no illegal immigrants in this state.. I think, the main problem here is about employers, not due to the loose control of our state boundaries..
