I refer to the new charges of rioting brought today at the KL Sessions Court against Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Keadilan Deputy President Azmin Ali and Badrul Hisham Shaharin in relation to the Bersih 3.0 gathering.
The charges are baseless, politically motivated and a shocking abuse of government power. Prime Minister Najib Razak, through his control of the police and and the Attorney-General, is directly responsible for this new criminal charge against our country's parliamentary opposition leader.
Criminalizing and jailing the opposition is a classic tactic of violent, authoritarian and undemocratic regimes. Najib's methods are similar to that of Hitler and Stalin who also brought trumped-up criminal charges against political opponents.
Disregard for the law
Najib's continuing manipulation of the legal process and disregard for the rule of law is a serious threat to democracy in our country and to the well-being of the rakyat. Najib's subversion and undermining of our democratic values is an unforgivable act of treachery against the people of this nation.
Najib's actions also undermine and destroy national institutions such as the police, judiciary and prosecution agencies which are meant to be independent and impartial. We call upon Najib to drop all criminal charges against Anwar Ibrahim and the others arising from the Bersih 3.0 peaceful gathering.
We further call upon Prime Minister Najib and the Barisan Nasional to cease this political persecution of Anwar Ibrahim and the political opposition, and instead engage us in fair and constructive political debate and discussion.
