Selangor defends Unisel’s track record

The University of Selangor (Unisel) is doing well, the Selangor government said, contrary to claims from the opposition.
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government has refuted claims that Universiti Selangor (Unisel) has done poorly over the years.
According to Selangor executive council member on education Dr Halimah Ali, Unisel’s enrollment was at an all-time high.
“As of June 2012, we have 13,528 students who have enrolled in Unisel, with another 2,784 who are expected to graduate [this year],” the Selat Kelang assemblywoman told the Selangor Legislative Assembly today.
She also proceeded to show the Dewan Negeri Selangor copies of newspaper clippings supposedly praising the university.
Halimah was responding to Jeram assemblyman Amiruddin Setro, who claimed that Unisel’s performance was on the decline.
He also asked what were Unisel’s graduate and student registrations since 2008, when Pakatan Rakyat took over the state government.
To this, Halimah said that 12,501 students had registered in 2008, while another 2,088 had graduated.
In 2009, this shifted to 11,955 registered students along with 2,350 graduations.
In 2010, the number of registered students decreased to 9,784, while graduations jumped to 3,231.
In 2011, the number of registered students was 10,035, while graduations that year went up to 4,106.
Formed in 1999, Unisel currently operates in two campuses; Bestari Jaya and Shah Alam.
While Halimah was addressing the Dewan Negari, around 300 people demonstrated outside the Selangor state secretariat’s gates.
Hailing from the anti-Pakatan group Gerakan Prihatin Rakyat Selangor (GPRS), the crowd -many of whom were on motorcycles- called for an end to the state government’s problems.
Amongst their claims was the Selangor government politicising Unisel, closing an eye to Yayasan Selangor irregularities and matters involving the PKNS field at Kelana Jaya.
They handed over a memorandum to Selangor state officials before dispersing at 11:30am
